Type Approval Explained

In plain English: what wireless type approval is, why every country runs its own, and how it differs from CE and FCC.

What Is Type Approval?

Type approval is the process by which a government authority approves a specific product model ("type") as fit to transmit on that country's radio spectrum. Once approved, that exact model may be sold and used in the country.

Approves a type, not a batch

Each model/variant is assessed. Changes to the radio — antenna, power, frequency — usually trigger re-assessment.

Protects the spectrum

Authorities control who may transmit and on what channels, to prevent interference.

Country-specific

There is no global radio approval. Each country's authority runs its own system.

Key point: A device with FCC ID or CE-RED still needs a separate type approval in each Southeast Asian market. CE/FCC reports may reduce testing in some markets (transfer), but the local approval is always required.
